One of the most competitive and prestigious scratch cups in Ireland is up for decision this weekend in Dundalk. This will be the 50th staging of the event. Ciaran Molloy from Ardee was a runaway winner last year on a fantastic score of 137 and may well be the man to beat. Ciaran also cantered away from the field in winning leading qualifier at last years North of Ireland Championship with an impressive two round total of 133 around the famed Portrush links. While Ciaran has had a sluggish start to the season by his standards, the return to a favorite venue can often prove to be a kick start to a season.
Dundalk as always will provide a strong field with a top quality venue. Their is a very impressive list of names on the trophy including Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke, Michael Hoey, JB Carr, John Carr, Dave Sheahan, Declan Brannigan, Barry Reddan, Noel Fox, Michael McGeady, Peter Rodgers and Danny Coyle. I could go on and on - and on. Suffice to say the winner here will earn his victory.
As a lont time pilgrim to the Wee County for the Dundalk Scratch Cup I can personally vouch for the quality of the course and the hospitality bestowed on visitors. The welcome and reception received has been second to none and is very much appreciated by all the players.
I return year on year to see old friends and maybe someday figure in the prizes. From about ten visits I have not even managed to win as much as a booby prize.
The quality of the golf course and the reception received however make this one of the most enjoyable events of the year. I still look forward to the day where I will be able to go up and shake the Captains hand and take a prize with me for the long journey home.
