Selfridge is new Irish Champion.

Chris Selfridge completed an impressive performance by leading from pillar to post to win the 2012 Irish Close Championship at Royal Portrush yesterday. Selfridge from Moyola Park, on a golf scholarship in the States, fired a brilliant 66 in round one and was never headed for the rest of the tournament. 283 (-5) was a very impressive total considering the stiff breeze that blew for practically the entire tournament. I had ventured in an earlier blog that it might be double figures under par but I had not factored in the persistent wind.
Gary Hurley and Reeve Whitson finished tied second two shots back and were the only other who finished under par. Eugene Smith continues to present on leaderboards finishing fourth on level par. Ritchie O Donovan and Dermot McElroy finished tied 5th on 292.
Well done to Chris and also a special thanks to Dermot McElroy who saved us a few bob after closing witha 68 to finish in the places.
Ps.
I stayed in the Links View guesthouse for the event and the location and hospitality was second to none. Situated at the gates of the course, I would highly recommend it for anyone intending spending a few days in Portrush.
